Posting Date: May 23, 2018
Job Description
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to develop graph and data analysis algorithms with applications to computational science to meet the challenges posed by next-generation high-performance computing hardware. Increasingly heterogeneous architectures, reduced on-node memory bandwidth, and ever-growing demands for extreme levels of concurrency are driving the need for novel portable and highly scalable algorithms. In this position, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of enthusiastic, multi-disciplinary researchers to meet national computing needs in energy, climate, and national security. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Conduct innovative research and software development in high-performance graph and data analysis algorithms for physics-based and data-centric applications + Execute and optimize your software on state-of-the-art testbed computers and supercomputers at Sandia and other DOE facilities + Collaborate with engineers, mathematicians and scientists across many disciplines + Publish in journals and conferences, and present at national and international venues
Required:
+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in computer science, mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related engineering or science discipline + Research experience in graph algorithms, data analysis, or sparse linear algebra kernels + Experience with object-oriented programming in C++ + Experience in parallel programming on single node architectures (e.g., GPUs, multicore CPUs) + Technical publications in HPC conferences and journals, and/or released software used by applications
Desired:
+ Communication skills appropriate for participating in multi-disciplinary teams of mathematicians, engineers and computer scientists + Experience developing and deploying robust parallel software + Experience working in collaborative software teams + Experience running and optimizing software on parallel systems + Experience in architecture-specific optimizations (e.g. multicore CPUs, GPUs, or Xeon Phi) + Experience in large-scale (e.g. MPI-based) parallel programming + Experience in performance-portable parallel programming (e.g. Kokkos)
Department Description:
The Center for Computing Research (CCR) at Sandia creates technology and solutions for many of our nation's most demanding national security challenges. The Center's portfolio spans the spectrum from fundamental research to state¿of¿the¿art applications. Software products are essential tools and critical deliverables as a part of our work. CCR plays a large and growing role in the US and international community in the exploration, adaptation, adoption, development, deployment and dissemination of software engineering methodologies and best practices for CSE. As part of CCR, the Scalable Algorithms Department is focused on developing new algorithms and approaches to address the challenges posed by next-generation computing hardware. The department intends to use its expertise in applied mathematics and computational science to address these challenges and help define the future of computing. While mission driven and focused, the Scalable Algorithms Department performs most of its research in the public domain, which affords the top research and development professionals in the department the opportunity to publish in the open literature and effectively team with leaders at other labs, universities, and industry.
