Post Doc Res Assoc

University Of Wyoming

Description

Post Doc Res Assoc - (21000081)

Postdoctoral Associates are temporary Academic Professionals dedicated to the pursuit of greater professional expertise after the attainment of the doctoral degree. This category recognizes that doctoral recipients in some disciplines may require intensive advanced work in a particular discipline before seeking permanent employment. Postdoctoral Associates are not eligible for extended- term appointments. It is characteristic of Postdoctoral Associates to work with a small set of faculty mentors who are responsible for directing the employee's research and training. The temporary nature of internships, the precariousness of grant funding, and the desire of many Postdoctoral Associates to acquire permanent employment early in their careers call for a specific set of governing regulations for this category of employee.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Basile research lab at the Department of Chemistry, University of Wyoming, is looking for a Post-Doc to conduct metabolomics, genomics and cell biology research in a highly interdisciplinary environment (laboratories of Prof. Franco Basile -Analytical Chemistry- and Prof. Naomi Ward -Botany). The successful candidate will study the role of sterol lipids in the bacterium Gemmata obscuriglobus using tools from microscopy, chemical biology, genomics, metabolomics and proteomics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be expected to support on-going research in elucidating the effects of sterol inhibition on lipid membrane composition in the bacterium Gemmata obscuriglobus using microscopy and metabolomics- lipidomics tools, with the opportunity to include proteomics. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, planning, and execution of experiments following guiding principles for ethical research. Research work will also involve the analysis of data (targeted quantitative, untargeted metabolomics, metabolic pathways (multi-omics), cellular imaging data), and subsequent communication of the results by both oral (conferences and meetings) and written (peer-reviewed publications) means. Specific duties include, but are not limited to cultivate microbial cultures, perform chemical biology research in metabolomics, active participation in group meetings, attend national and international conferences, mentor and train other students involved in the project (undergraduate and graduate), maintenance of microscopy and MS equipment, and develop and write protocol SOP's.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A Doctoral Degree is required for this position, however, consideration will be given to applicants that are currently pursuing their Doctoral Degree and will complete the degree prior to starting work.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates with a Ph.D. in bioanalytical chemistry, chemical biology, and/or cell biology with strong communication skills (oral and written). We are especially interested in candidates with microscopy and/or mass spectrometry experience that can effectively operate in our highly interdisciplinary environment. Previous postdoc experience in metabolomics/lipidomics, proficiency in computational methods (R, Python, etc) and a solid publication record are strong merits. Three strongly supportive letters of recommendation from direct supervisors are required.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Complete the online application and upload the following for a complete application: cover letter, resume or C.V. and contact information for four work-related references.

HIRING STATEMENT:

UW is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Educator and Employer. We are committed to a multicultural environment and strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, veterans and persons with disabilities.
